How to Study Mathematics

1. Learn with understanding
Learning mathematics requires lots of practice. However, practice without understanding creates a rote memory that only lasts a very short time. That is why many students feel confident during lessons, but when it comes to their turn to solve new questions, they don't know how to start.
When learning a new concept or theory, it is important to build a strong connection with prior knowledge and ask many "why" questions throughout the process.
2. Revise Frequently

0n average, people forget around 50% of what they learn on the first day, about 70% on the second day, and 90% percent within the first week. That's why a good revision routine is essential for good learning outcomes. Many students have reported that revising on the same day and over the weekend is the most time-efficient revision routine for mathematics learning.

3. Catch up missing lessons

Mathematics content is sequential. Missing a lesson means you do not have the foundation concept for the new topic. Here are a few suggestions for catching up maths lesson: 1. Email your teacher as soon as possible and request learning materials; 2. Ask your classmate for notes; 3. Read through all collected materials and attempt questions without looking at answers. Email your teacher if you have any problems; 4. Hire a tutor if you miss too many lessons.

4. Focus on mistakes
There are three common mistakes: 1. careless mistakes; 2. computational mistakes; and 3. conceptual mistakes. It is important to record common mistakes and their reasons, sort them into categories and revise them often, to avoid making the same mistakes in the future.

5. Organise study notes

Class notes tend to messy. Some homework questions are straight-forward but some require revision and reattempt. That is why it is important to organise all study notes systematically, using tables to summarise similar concepts, and using mindmaps to navigate connections of different topics .

6. Manage time well

Many students fail to perform at their normal level during exams because of poor time management. Practising problem-solving under limited time more often would help them become more aware of time and get used to the stress under exam situation.

7. Seek for help

Friends, teachers, tutors, and family are all important members of the support system. Proactively seek for help when it is needed.
